When is a referral to a surgeon or other medical specialists needed?
- Serious Fractures leading to instability
- Acute neurological compromise (i.e from a large herniated disc) involving paralysis, bowel/ bladder dysfunction, or worsening motor/ sensory impairments
- Malignancy
- Infection
- Severe, progressive chronic pain (i.e., from a specific, known spine abnormality that does not get better with conservative treatment)
